Probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone, but the U.S. government (meaning you, me and everyone else who pays taxes) isn’t likely to recover all the money sunk into the U.S. auto industry, some $74 billion. If my math is correct and the government recovers a little more than half of it, that still means every man, woman and child in this country just wrote a check for about $120 and sent it to Chrysler and GM. Reckon they’ll take that into consideration next time I want to buy a car?
