Advertising Flap

Two of the largest suppliers of motor oil to the lube industry, Pennzoil and Castrol, are engaged in a flap over advertising. According to a press release we received today, the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus has recommended that BP America, Castrol’s parent company, modify or discontinue advertising claims for the Castrol GTX motor oil brand. 

The advertising claims are featured in Castrol’s “sludge” ads broadcast on TV and via the Web. You can read the details here, the long and short of the claims, brought by Pennzoil, are that Castrol’s claims are based on European sludge tests and are not applicable to the U.S. market.
BP America has said it will appeal the finding.
